9. The Garments and the Anointing Oil

Exodus 28:40-43

“For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them. And you shall make hats for them, for glory and beauty ( honor and glory, dignity and strength ). So you shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him. You shall anoint them, consecrate - ( hand (the open one (indicating power, means, direction, etc.),)  them, and sanctify  them, that they may minister to Me as priests. And you shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs. They shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they come into the tabernacle of meeting, or when they come near the altar to minister in the holy place, that they do not incur iniquity and die. It shall be a statute forever to him and his descendants after him.


Isaiah 61:10

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,

My soul shall be joyful in my God;

For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,

He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,

As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,

And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Exodus 30:22-32

Moreover the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.

“And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you.

Exodus 30: 22-33   


The ingredients of the anointing oil - Jesus fulfilled the ingredients:


1.  myrrh - 500 parts – related to pain and suffering and death (

the Son of man must suffer


Matthew 26:38  

Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me."


2.  cinnamon - 250 parts – 

from an unused root (meaning to erect); cinnamon bark (as in upright rolls): 


 John 3:14  

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,


John 12:32  

"And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself."


3.  calamus (cane) - 250 parts – 

a primitive root; to erect, i.e. create; by extension, to procure, especially by purchase (causatively, sell); by implication to own: 


Acts 20:28  "Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.


Revelation 5:9  

And they sang a new song, saying: "You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,

4.   cassius - 500 parts

a primitive root; to shrivel up, i.e. contract or bend the body (or neck) in deference: 


John 19: 30 

He said it is finished, bowed His head and died


We are holy because of the blood and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.


Exo 30:30  

"And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate  them, that they may minister to Me as priests

You shall put the holy garments on Aaron, and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest. And you shall bring his sons and clothe them with tunics. You shall anoint them, as you anointed their father, that they may minister to Me as priests; for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.”
